Grip is another important aspect of proper K9 decoy training. When we refer to “grip” we are referring to how the dog bites the equipment. We will typically be able to obtain a better grip with a sleeve as opposed to a suit. When trying to resolve grip issues, we will generally resort to using a sleeve to remedy them.
These dogs are super-athletes that have the highest level of training a dog can receive. Ensure Support – You must have a family and work that support while being gone for the thousands of hours it takes to be a SAR dog handler. Calls always start around dinner time, on the holidays and weekends.

The first step is becoming a police officer, as you may need to work as a patrol officer for two years before taking on a canine handler job. While many police departments may not require their police officers to have an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, most departments do have this requirement for their K9 handlers
During his tenure, he served 16 years as a dog handler and was the department-assigned agency K9 trainer. In 1991, he created the International Police K9 Conference, a hands-on training program for law enforcement K9 teams throughout North America, ultimately working with over 3500 K9 teams over the course of its 20-year tenure.
Develop the Necessary Skills. When it comes to being a K9 handler, you need more than just a love for dogs. While you may not need to have an excessive amount of experience to break into the field, it helps to have strong communication and leadership skills, as well as a deep understanding of dog behavior and problem solving.
